Overland Expo unveils 2025 Ultimate Overland Vehicle Builds

Each year, Overland Expo debuts their vision of the ultimate overland vehicle, typically built with the latest and greatest. Last year they went with the smaller GMC Canyon AT4X. This year, it’s the full-size GMC Sierra AT4X, and it’s got all the upgrades.

The build starts with GMC’s off-road AT4X trim, which gets a heavy duty boxed steel frame with a whopping 3,000lb payload capacity. The stock suspension is a proven off-road performer, too, with a 1.5″ lift and DSSV (Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve) shocks that adjust to the terrain, and electronic locking rear differential.

It’s all powered by their Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 engine with Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.

From there, AEV toughens it up with:

  • Winch-capable, stamped steel front bumper
  • Stamped steel rear bumper
  • Fender flares
  • AEV prototype light bar
  • Salta 18×9 +18 wheels w/ 37″ BF Goodrich KO2 tires
  • 37″ tire clearance kit
  • Stamped steel skid plates protecting the radiator, IFS, transmission, and transfer case
  • Snorkel air intake
  • ComeUp SOLO 12.5rs winch
  • Magnaflow stainless steel exhaust
  • Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Pro Series w/ WirelessOne compressor

Overland Expo then added more lights, using plus four 6″ Vision X Explora lights on the bumper, plus five more up top, and two 3″ auxiliary lights in the rear bumper. It’s all controlled by a Switch Pros SP9000 system.

A ViAir portable air compressor and Rig Ready Systems Jackout HD kit handle flat repairs.

Comms are Midland MXT575 radio, and they added a Redzone Wireless internet system and Oleo Satellite Communicator.

The interior gets a Tackform TRAXX system for dash-mounting a phone and tablet. ONWRD Supply Co’s seatback organization kits keep the little stuff ready.

2025 Ultimate Overland Moto

For two wheeled fun, their 2025 Ultimate Overland Motorcycle build starts with a Suzuki V-Strom 800DE, the “any road” model in the V-Strom lineup with 21″ front wheel and 17″ rear, both spoked. It also has 8.7″ of ground clearance and suspension travel, with a fully adjustable suspension.

They added lights, skid plates, racks, cruise control, upgraded mirrors & battery, phone mount, hand & light guards, and more. You can read the full story on this one here.

The vehicles will be on display at all four remaining Overland Expo events this year, and they’re both auctioned off at the end of the season to raise money for the Overland Expo Foundation. Get those dates (and find other events near you) in our 2025 Overland Event Guide.

I'm a serial traveller who's crisscrossed the US more times than I can count. Current rigs are a '19 Vandoit Ford Transit camper van and an '05 GX470, both fully outfitted for off-road adventures, plus a healthy fleet of gravel bikes & MTBs. On two wheels or four, I love exploring the world from the backroads.
