Full size trucks with platform bed camper conversions aren’t typically lightweight, but 27 North says their new Trekker Expedition Truck is up to 5,000 pounds lighter than competitors thanks to a carbon fiber composite camper shell.
It’s also shorter, making it more maneuverable, but gives up nothing in terms of interior or cabin space, and it’s fully capable offroad, too. Here’s what you need to know…
It’s built on the mighty Dodge Ram 5500 short wheelbase, but still a dual cab truck body so there’s plenty of room up front while driving. Total vehicle length is 25 feet, about the same as most camper vans.
The camper shell is just 699 pounds thanks to a one-piece monolithic carbon fiber-infused construction. Even they said they didn’t believe their engineers until they actually weighed one!
The result is a complete truck that’s 15,000 pounds, which they say is 5,000 pounds lighter than their nearest competitor. Here’s their walk-thru video:

Key features include:
- Full aluminum interior walls
- Ultra-weather proof flooring
- King size bed
- Full kitchenette
- Wet bath
- 50-gallon freshwater tank

The rear dinette can convert to a bed, too, and doubles as a workspace with swiveling tables for desks.

The Trekker has Dodge’s 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel, rolls on 40″ tires, and solar charging on the roof, with a ladder for roof access. Starts at $575,000.
27 North Venture X camper van

For van fans, the new Venture X is build on the Mercedes Sprinter AWD high-roof 170″ wheelbase chassis and gets a full aluminum interior build…no wood used for structural anything. Katzkin leather seating surfaces and a Plyboo wood counter top add a bit of coziness.

It has an Ecoflow 48V Electrical system with 5,000Wh 48V Lithium Battery, 3000 Watt Inverter, and 175W Solar Panel. Multiple 110V Outlets and USB Ports give you plenty of charging spots.

Outside, it has all-terrain tires, Flat Line/Owl Vans Sprinter ladder & tire carrier, running boards, a 10’ awning, and lockable water fill port for the 30-gallon freshwater tank.

The Venture X is (relatively) affordable, with base models starting at just $206,900. A fully equipped Adventure Package is available for $224,900 and adds a roof top tent, front bumper, 50″ light bar, ditch lights, and passenger-side Sherpa cargo carrier.
