If you’ve got a full size truck and want a premium camper shell with perhaps the largest rooftop tent ever, look no further than the Dirtbox Genesis.
Built with extruded T6 aluminum framing that incorporates tons of T-track channels, it’s a fully modular design that starts off with a healthy dose of creature comforts to get you started.
Solid alloy structure
One of the key features of the Genesis is its reinforced scissor-lift mechanism. Dual gas struts help left the 8′ long lid, which can carry up to 250lbs of cargo on top even while it’s propped up for sleeping.
When closed, the design shuttles rain off the back so you won’t dump a bunch of water onto your cab when you open it.
Oversized hinges at the front keep it stable in heavy winds, and work with the shock cord to pull the canopy inward when folding it up.
This also creates an extra 19″ of height (16″ useable after accounting for the mattress’ thickness) inside, and makes room for a window. That means 360ยบ of visibility from inside the tent, something few if any other wedge-style RTTs offer.
The inside won’t come with all of these accessories, storage bins, etc., but you can add them. The base price does include dual sPod power management screens, though, letting you easily add and control interior and exterior lights and accessories. One sits at the rear of the shell, and the other is inside the tent. Both are Bluetooth capable so you can also control things with an app.
Sleeping arrangements
An opening lets you pass through from the cab to the bed…
…where you’ll find a LOT of sleeping room. It’s deep, and luxurious, with triple layer walls that insulate for cold and heat. The outer fabric is highly waterproof while still being breathable, followed by a slippery layer to help all of the fabrics slide smoothly when opening and closing, then an Alcantara interior lining.
This blacks out the interior when you want, with integrated lights along the top to help you see. Full size side and rear windows, plus a small front window, all have mesh screens.
Their 270ยบ awning is sold separately and comes in right- and left-side mounting options.
The Dirtbox Genesis starts at $20,500 to $25,200 depending on which truck model and bed length, and yes, you’ll need a full-size truck to support the weight).
They also make standard roof racks and other accessories, too, with a clever quick-release system (shown in the video). From water tanks to awnings to this shower, everything clips onto mounts so they’re easy to remove…super handy for filling that water tank.
The shower has two doors, letting you enter from either side, which also makes it a great “decontamination” room before entering the canopy if you have the walls up to create a private shelter.
