The new Four Wheel Campers Campout truck bed insert is a fully modular camper shell that lets you build out (and change) the interior however (and whenever) you want.
Available in 5′, 6′ and 8′ sizes to fit medium- and full-size pickup trucks, the design comes with standard power & utility modules built in, but everything else can be moved, swapped, added, and deleted.
This makes it super easy to build it out for the adventure du jour, perfect for multi-sport, multi-activity folks…or those who sometimes travel solo, sometimes with a friend, and sometimes with their family.
FWC Campout details
Quick background: Four Wheel Campers has been building lightweight, slide-in truck bed campers since 1972. And they’ve got dealers across the US, so they’ve got both experience and lots of service locations & showrooms if you need them.

The built-in power and utility modules come standard with a 120V shore power system with 30A converter and 12V power system connected to the starter battery, and it’s prewired for solar panels.

It’s also pre-wired with power ports inside and out, making it easy to charge phones and laptops, run a ceiling vent fan, and keep a smaller electric cooler running for a bit. There’s even an exterior 12V power port specifically for a Starlink satellite internet antenna.
All that said, you’ll probably want to opt for some of Lithium battery and solar panel upgrade options to provide true off-grid power solutions. Those range from $625 up to $3,450 each, with a good battery-plus-solar-plus-inverter combo running about $6,600. Full pricing at bottom of post.

Exterior attachment points let you add a variety of gear mounts, and it includes MOLLE panels and L-tracks on both sides. Use them to set up an outdoor kitchen (and tap into the external propane port), stow sports gear, recovery gear, etc.

The frame is all aluminum and fully insulated. There’s a powered roof vent van included, plus windows throughout, including an emergency escape hatch on the sliding side window.
The pop-up liner is also insulated and has four windows with integrated covers. Interior and exterior lighting come standard, and gas struts lift the roof for you.
Interior features & modules

The over-cab section holds the main bed, extending anywhere from 41″ to 58″ in front of the truck bed depending on model.
Total height when open ranges from 6’4″ to 6’6″, but that’s external height, so expect it to be a bit shorter inside. Full dimensions and specs at bottom of post.

Most kitchen and cooler modules and options are build around Dometic appliances, including their electric water pump and faucet kit, coolers, and power. Cooktop can be gas or induction.

The modular layout lets you pick and choose what you need or want. Here are a few examples of layouts for the smallest 5′ camper:

And here’s two layout examples for the 6′ (left) and 8′ (right) to show the difference in available space:

Power and Utility modules are fixed to the rear, leaving the rest of the living space open to customization.
