While it’s mainly marketed as an e-bike rack that can handle two bikes up to 100lbs each, that strength makes the new Kuat Piston ION bike rack a perfect option for off-road use, too.

There are a few limitations to what that means (no rock crawling, for example), and they suggest limiting per-bike weight to 50lbs, but for average overlanding on rutted dirt backroads, it’s down to party.
The Piston ION uses their dual tire cradles for a no-frame-contact hold on your bikes, with adjustable wheel stabilizers to prevent any bike wobble. An included e-bike ramp makes it easy to get heavier bikes on board.

They redesigned their foot lever to make it easier to raise and lower the rack, too, and added a twist-to-lock pin keeps it securely in position during travel.

Kuat Piston ION Specs include:
- 100lb capacity per tray
- 80lb per-bike limit for RVs
- 50lb per-bike limit for off-road use
- 57″ max bike wheelbase
- Fits 18″ to 29″ wheels
- Max 4.8″ tire width
- 68lbs rack weight
- MSRP is $1,289.00

It comes only in a 2″ hitch version, with tail/brake light and license plate relocation kits available to add on separately. As long as your hitch is mounted directly to the chassis (not the bumper), it’s also rated for RV use up to 80lbs per bike.
