If prefer rooftop camping over trailers, but still want solid walls around you, Mammoth Overland’s new SKL (“skull”) is a hard-sided rooftop tent that adapts their trailer design philosophy to vehicle-mounted camping.
Priced at $11,500, the SKL is expensive, and also big and heavy, making it best suited for trucks with heavy-duty racks over the bed.
It measures 89″ x 58.1″ x 18″ (LxWxH) closed, and opens to 64.8″ tall. That means a lot of space inside, boasting a king-size mattress length, and width somewhere between queen and full-size dimensions, comfortably sleeping two adults.
Base weight is 300 pounds, meaning you’ll need a lot of roof load capacity, hence our recommendation for mounting it to a strong rear rack.
The all-aluminum monocoque construction with riveted assembly mimics their trailers’ aerospace construction methods. The dual-wall panels have R5 insulation between inner and outer skins, enabling four-season camping capability.
Multiple porthole windows provide ambient lighting throughout the interior, while the standard electrical system includes a 6Ah battery bank powering LED interior lighting and an electric ventilation fan. The unit comes solar-ready for off-grid power generation, just add panels.
Available options include expanded battery capacity with either a single 12V 104Ah lithium iron phosphate battery ($1,500, bringing total weight to 330 pounds) or dual batteries providing 208Ah total capacity ($3,000, 360 pounds total).
If your rack can still support more, a roof rack option ($500) adds 250-pound dynamic and 500-pound static load capacity for additional gear storage.
Production begins in Q1 2026, with a $1,000 deposit securing your position in the queue and delivery planned by April 15th, 2026.
