Because YouTube will only get you so far, and because it’s nice to have a physical guide handy when you’re out in the field, may I recommend Overlanding 101, by Scott Brady.
Brady is CEO of Overland International, the company behind the Overland Journal and Expedition Portal. He’s also the first to take the same vehicle across all seven continents and has circumnavigated the globe three times. And now he’s compiled all of that experience and expertise into this book:

There are five Table of Content pages like this, covering literally everything you’ll need to know. From getting started to building a rig to packing the essentials, it’s all here. Plus recovery, safety, and more.
There are also a lot of great photos throughout, and it’s fully up to date with modern vehicles and tech, too.
Even if you think you know everything you need to know, it’s reassuring to hear (read) someone else say it, too. But, I guarantee there’ll be stuff in here that’s both new and useful to anyone into overlanding, making it a worthwhile guide to stash in your seatback pocket and peruse by the campfire.
For those just getting into it, consider this a well-written crash course that’ll level up your game very, very quickly.
It’s also a great guide for your co-pilots, giving them tips on marshaling and recovery and all the other things they’ll need to help out with. Particularly useful if your co-pilot is the type that doesn’t like you telling them what to do or how to do it. Let Scott take that heat…
Lastly, there’s solid info on international travel, which is the kind of thing that’s hard (and dumb) to try to learn on the fly. Given my interest in crossing borders to the south someday, and exploring more in Europe and Asia, too, this is a solid primer on what to expect and how to handle it.
Overall, well worth the $27.99 cover price, and also a great gift for your overlanding spouse or buddies (or the spouse or buddies that you’re trying to get into overlanding). Available now on Amazon and bookstores.
