The new Rocky Talkie 5-Watt Radio is a more powerful version of their original FRS Mountain Radio handheld, putting it into the GMRS category and boosting max range to 35+ miles. Typical backcountry terrain range is 2-8 miles.
It’s compact, but packs a bit 1800mAh battery that lasts up to five days even in freezing (-20ºF) temps. It’s swappable, too, so you can carry a spare battery.
One of the unique features about Rocky Talkie is there’s no screen. The channel and other info shines through a solid cover, which protects them and makes the surface stronger, with fewer things to crack or break.
The rugged design is drop-proof, IP67 waterproof to 1m, and comes with a 360º rotatable steel gator clip & backup leash. Operating temperature range is an impressive -20ºF to 120ºF.
It has 22 standard channels w/ 8 repeater channels, 121 privacy codes, and dual-channel listening. It also scans NOAA weather channels, monitors NOAA emergency alerts, and is GMRS repeater capable.
Options include their carabiner clip, handsfree headset, waterproof handheld mic, and longer antenna. A dash mount for overlanders is coming soon. MSRP $165 each.
