Tentbox’s GO ultralight “softshell” rooftop tent is just 73lbs

Until now, any rooftop tent we’ve seen hitting the 70-ish pound mark has used carbon fiber and cost a lot. But the new Tentbox GO uses a cot-like design to hit just 73lbs and stay affordable.

The GO uses a stretched fabric bed over a tubular frame, similar to Helinox’s cots (which we hear are very comfortable and supportive). It has an optional center padded bar you can install underneath to create two “cradles” when you’re using it for two people, so you don’t roll into each other.

The mattress is just 45″ wide, but is a whopping 87″ long, plenty of room for taller people. And the bent end makes extra room for feet.

The exterior is waterproof and coated to keep rain rolling off. The bottom is a heavy duty tarpaulin material, and it comes with an easy-to-use fabric cover to protect it while driving. Unlike other softshell tents with notoriously time-consuming closure procedures, this one appears quick and easy to install.

They offer a self-inflating mattress ($125, sold separately) that fits the dimensions, or add any air or foam mattress you want.

And then leave it and your pillows and sleeping bags inside when you close it, they’ll fit, making it even easier to park and sleep. They say it opens and sets up in 60 seconds.

The included 102″ extendable ladder also fits inside the tent when it’s closed down. It attaches to either side and is tall enough for most vehicles. A complete tent mounting kit is also included to fit most vehicles’ roof rack cross bars.

The powdercoated steel tubular structure ships like flat pack furniture, so you’ll need to assemble it. Once done, you can leave it together permanently, or get the optional storage bag ($99) and break it down between trips for compact off-the-vehicle storage.
